Carey keeps an eye on the weather

More rain is in the forecast and Carey officials are hoping it won't be as severe as Sunday's downpour, which dumped as much as 3 1/2" of water on the west side of town.
That meant flooding of some rural roads as well as streets in Snyder Park and, by 7:45 p.m. Monday, Lake Street in Carey.
The sandbags were out on Vance Street and ready for use, but so far businesses have dodged the bullet.
Mark Vehre, Carey superintendent of schools, said at least five rooms below the gymnasium took on water Monday that was, "over my shoe." He said the art room, two science labs, the ag room and the fitness center on the other end of the building were all flooded.
With water across the road in many areas, safety for the buses became an added concern that resulted in a two-hour delay Monday morning. Vehre noted that one bus route was inaccessible because of the high water. Students who couldn't make it to school because of the flooding were given excused absences.
By Monday morning.  water was over the road on CR 97, Magnolia drive and several other streets at Snyder Park.
Brian Spencer, director of public works, and his department had been focusing on his regular duties until about 11 a.m. Monday when they turned attention toward the sandbags. "We're holding our own but we don't know what's going to happen if it starts raining again," said Johnson. "We may or may not be able to maintain."
Most basements and crawl spaces have drained or been pumped out. Now the wait for the next round of weather.
